Flesh tone should match the color of your skin. Flesh tone shoes can be purchased in the desired color or they can be pancaked (pancaking is not an option with leather ballet shoes).
Black shoes can be purchased in the desire color or they can be spray painted.
Green shoes will be spray painted by Ann or Erica. Please set aside a pair of shoes that you wish to be sprayed.
All items can be purchase or ordered from The Performer’s Closet 3101 Gilmore Ave. Suite #105 (661)569-8933.
Pancaking Shoes
Buy pancake (cheap foundation makeup). You need the shade that is closest to the tone of your tights.
Next, you need to fill a shallow cup with water. You can also just pancake your shoe near a sink.
- Take a paper towel and dampen the tip of it with the water you filled the cup with.
- Take the damp paper towel and rub it in the makeup. Tip: Don’t make the towel drippy. You don’t want to soak the shoes. Be patient, go slowly at first.
- Hold your pointe shoe with one hand and with the hand that you’re holding the paper towel with, brush the pointe shoe with the pancaked tip of the towel. Tip: always stroke the pancake in the direction the satin is going. This will make the pancake job so much easier and you’ll use way less makeup.
Keep going with steps 1-3, putting more pancake on the shoe until the entire shoe is covered. Tip: Do not pancake the bottom, non-satin part.
Repeat the process on the other pointe shoe.
Once the shine is gone from both shoes, leave the shoes to dry on their own. This can take 30 minutes to two hours, depending on how much water you’ve used.
Remember: you should pancake your shoes at least a few hours before your performance. Pancaked shoes that are worn too soon after rub off on the stage/floor, so plan ahead and give yourself enough time.
This technique cannot be used on leather ballet shoes.
